Safety and Health

Vumbachikwe Mining Company prides itself on having a comprehensive Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) policy which is communicated effectively to all employees and supply-chain partners within its established mining operations.

The Total Injury Frequency Rate (total injuries per 200 000 man-hours worked) at Sandawana has been reduced from 1.96 in 2004 to 0.97 in 2005, an improvement of 51%.

We care about the health of all our employees, recognising the importance of this, both as a business imperative and as an important social commitment. At Sandawana there is an on-site clinic at both mines. With regard to HIV/AIDS, employees are encouraged to have tests to ascertain their status but such screening is not compulsory.

We also support clinics within the local communities. Vumbachikwe Mining Company has assisted the Gwanda General Hospital in areas such as the provision of safe drinking water and waste disposal management. The main referral hospital in this mining area, it provides a vital service to the community.
